For the past few weeks, fans of the Montreal Canadiens have been eagerly awaiting news on the discussions between the team and star forward Cole Caufield regarding the terms of his future contract with the team.

While it is clear that Caufield should extend his stay in Montreal and sign with the club, it seems that an agreement between Kent Hughes and the forward is not as easy as initially thought, given the lengthy negotiation period.

According to the remarks of journalist Darren Dreger fromTSN the salary discussions for Caufield appear to be based on the contract of a star player from the Ottawa Senators. With their comparable talent and career trajectory, some believe it would be fair for Cole Caufield to receive a salary similar to none other than Tim Stützle.

At 21 years old, Stützle was a third overall pick in the 2020 draft. In the 2022-23 season, the forward scored 39 goals and collected 51 assists for a total of 90 points in just 78 games. Starting next season, the German player will begin his new 8-year contract worth $66.8 million ($8.35 million per year).

On the other hand, at 22 years old, Cole Caufield was drafted by the Canadiens in the 15th overall position in the first round of the 2019 draft. In 46 games this season, he accumulated 36 points (26 goals and 10 assists) before having to stop playing due to a shoulder injury.

Does Caufield deserve a contract as high as Stützle's? Considering that his captain and good friend, Nick Suzuki, has a salary of $7.875 million per season for 8 years, would it be fair for the winger to potentially earn more?

It remains to be seen what the outcome of these negotiations between the Canadiens and Cole Caufield will be before the next season.
