The 2025 NHL training camp is already underway, but one notable absence with the Anaheim Ducks is drawing a lot of attention.
Instead, he's skating with the OHL's Ottawa 67's, his former junior team, while waiting for common ground to be found.
Honestly, I think this kind of standoff sends a strong message, both to the fans and to management.
The Stalemate Between McTavish and the Ducks Continues, and Montreal Is Watching Closely
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the issue isn't about money, but about contract length.
"With training camp on-ice sessions beginning today, Mason McTavish is skating with the OHL's Ottawa 67s
The contract stalemate continues in Anaheim. It's believed the Ducks prefer not to do a bridge, but no common ground yet"
This situation is delicate for Anaheim, especially after the departure of
Trevor Zegras over the summer.
McTavish is expected to become the offensive leader of this young team, coming off a career-high season with 22 goals and 30 assists.
He's also one of the few high-profile RFAs still without a contract, alongside
Luke Hughes in New Jersey.
But this situation doesn't only concern the Ducks..
From the Montreal Canadiens' perspective, a standoff like this is bound to draw attention.
In my opinion, big-market teams like the Habs could benefit if the Ducks decide to explore other options with their young player.
With such a deep prospect pool and plenty of draft picks in hand, Montreal has the means to get involved in conversations if Anaheim decides to make a move.
I really believe Hughes is watching this situation very closely..
