Despite the fact that the Montreal Canadiens are far from having a competitive roster, the organization finds itself among the worst teams in the league in terms of salary cap. In other words, the Habs are the worst team in the league with the highest salary cap.

The club ranks in the top 5 in the NHL, behind the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Vancouver Canucks, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and just ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Vegas Golden Knights, when it comes to salary cap.
Of course, even though his salary is removed from the team's salary cap at the beginning of the season, this takes into account Carey Price's $10.5 million salary. However, even without Price, the Canadiens are performing poorly for a team in the bottom third of the league.
Unfortunately for Kent Hughes, he has to work with several bad contracts left behind by the previous management of the club, including Mike Hoffman, Christian Dvorak, Joel Armia, and even Brendan Gallagher's hefty contract.
In fact, a trade proposal has been raised for Gallagher and it makes us reflect on the future of the organization.
To Arizona:

Brendan Gallagher
2nd-round pick

To Montreal:
Future considerations

Essentially, Hughes would pay a second-round pick to get rid of Gallagher's $6.5 million contract for another four seasons.
Although the fiery forward is an excellent leader and an important player in the team's locker room, he will never regain his form as a 30-goal scorer in a season. He hasn't played a full season since 2018-2019, and he has only scored 15 goals in his last 93 games, spanning two years.
Even though the Canadiens would have to pay a high price to part ways with Gallagher, the relief of $6.5 million in salary cap could become a very interesting asset to sign a player who could truly contribute offensively to the organization.
Let's just say that this trade proposal gives us something to think about.
