Currently, the Maple Leafs could be facing one of the toughest opponents in the first round of the playoffs, namely the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In addition to the pressure of getting past the first round, the Maple Leafs have a well-known history and facing one of the NHL's best teams in recent years represents a significant additional challenge.

Furthermore, the league chose to name Wes McCauley as the referee for the first game of the series, a controversial move that could have a negative impact on the Maple Leafs.

While McCauley is known for his legendary calls on the ice, he is also known for not being on good terms with Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe.

Several factors suggest this difficult relationship. For example, a few years ago, Keefe testified at a hearing against McCauley's brother-in-law, who is very close to him.

Additionally, Keefe was fined a few years ago for yelling at a referee, who happened to be Wes McCauley. Furthermore, it is curious to note that the Lightning has not lost a single game this season with McCauley on the ice, which is a rather strange coincidence.

The first game of the series took place on Tuesday night, and the Lightning won a crushing victory against the Maple Leafs with a score of 7-3.

Although McCauley was not the cause of this crushing defeat, it was enough to cause frustration among Toronto fans. Criticisms of the league and its choice of official immediately flooded social media.

It will be interesting to follow the league's response in the coming days regarding this controversy. It remains to be seen if McCauley will be named to referee Maple Leafs games during the ongoing playoffs. This is a story to follow closely.
