Potential trade involving goaltender Cayden Primeau: Renaud Lavoie has just made a big statement
The general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, will have a very important decision to make regarding Cayden Primeau in the coming days. Indeed, by Monday night, he will have to officially submit his list of 23 players for the start of the season.
Several options are available to the CH management: keeping three goalies on the roster, trading the young American goaltender, or sending the netminder to the Laval Rocket. However, the last option might be quite risky since #30 would have to go through waivers and therefore be available to the other 31 teams in the league.
Furthermore, during his appearance on BPM Sports radio, TVA Sports journalist Renaud Lavoie made a major statement, mentioning that the ideal move for the Habs would be to trade Cayden Primeau before then.
"What do we do with Cayden Primeau? The logical move would be Laval. However, he's only 24 and he's having a good camp. I'm not saying he will definitely be claimed off waivers, but the Canadiens would be taking a huge risk. He could be a regular goalie in the NHL and if you lose him, the team could regress! [...] The ideal would be to trade him!" - Renaud Lavoie
Wow! We weren't expecting such a statement!
Although the Canadiens drafted Jacob Fowler in the last draft, he should take a few seasons before reaching the NHL. Cayden Primeau would therefore become a prime option to replace Jake Allen and back up Samuel Montembeault when the veteran's contract expires.
However, Kent Hughes could also capitalize on the tough situation of certain teams, such as the Tampa Bay Lightning, to get a good return for his young goalie. One thing's for sure, this will be a topic to follow in the next few days.
It should be noted that Renaud Lavoie added that at this point, no decision had been made regarding Cayden Primeau.
