A major acquisition of Patrik Laine by the Canadiens: Monahan like trade?
Two years ago, almost to the day, Kent Hughes accepted the hefty contract of Sean Monahan and a first-round pick from the Flames, and a similar scenario could unfold with Patrik Laine.
Indeed, the Blue Jackets find themselves in a difficult situation, as Laine has clearly requested a trade, and they do not have many potential trade partners.
With the free agency market opening on July 1st, teams have spent over $1 billion on contracts, and the Canadiens are among the few organizations capable of absorbing Laine's $8.7 million salary.
"The few teams still interested in his services will absolutely want to talk to Laine before completing a trade for his acquisition.
The Seattle Kraken, Carolina Hurricanes, and Montreal Canadiens have been three of the teams most linked to the Finnish sniper.
To obtain his services, along with his hefty $8.7 million per year contract for two more seasons, the price should not be very high, despite the fact that he remains a pure goal-scorer full of talent." - Michaël Petit
The possibility of seeing another trade similar to the Sean Monahan deal is very real. Laine has immense talent and a devastating shot, but his tenure in Columbus has been far from successful.
In short, Columbus might have to give Laine away to another team, which would be a very negative outcome for them. One thing is certain, the sense of urgency is starting to be felt.
There aren't many potential trade partners left, and Don Waddell will have to bow to the offers he receives. These offers are likely very low, if not negative, and Kent Hughes is undoubtedly among those making them.
