Earlier this summer, the Montreal Canadiens believed they had finally found a cornerstone on defense with the arrival of Noah Dobson, but training camp has taken an unexpected turn.

The Canadiens experienced a worrying evening last night, as Noah Dobson left the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The star defenseman has now been placed day-to-day due to a groin injury. For a hockey player, that's one of the worst possible injuries.
Dobson is supposed to anchor the top 4 on defense and bring both offensive and defensive stability, something the team has been seeking for a long time.
Even if his absence seems temporary (hopefully), it comes at a critical moment in preparation, especially for a newcomer.

Noah Dobson's Injury Changes the Montreal Canadiens' Defensive Plans

The Canadiens described his status as "day-to-day," but groin injuries are known to be unpredictable.
A minor issue in September can easily follow a player throughout the fall.
As one observer explained:
"This is not the kind of injury you want to see at the start of camp, because it can break your rhythm and affect confidence."
It should be noted that Kaiden Guhle is facing the same kind of problem. So, as we speak, two top-4 defensemen are sidelined and the season hasn't even started yet.
The good news is that the Habs have plenty of depth on the blue line. Players like Jayden Strubble and Arber Xhekaj will certainly be forced to take on bigger roles!
If Dobson returns quickly, he'll be able to reclaim his spot without too much harm done. But if the injury lingers, the Canadiens risk starting the year without their most anticipated reinforcement.
