A Major Sigh of Relief After a Scary Moment for Cole Hutson

At 19 years old, the defenseman belongs to the Washington Capitals, having been selected in the second round in 2024. With Boston University in 2024-2025, he totaled 48 points in 39 games, including 14 goals.
He also received the Tim Taylor Award, given to the NCAA Rookie of the Year. At the 2025 World Junior Championship, he won gold with Team USA.
At that tournament, he became the first defenseman to lead the scoring race. He finished with three goals and eight assists for 11 points. This time, hockey took a back seat after a major scare.
Lane Hutson, 21, recently signed an eight-year contract extension. The deal is worth $70.8 million, with an average annual value of $8.85 million. It begins in 2026-2027 and runs through 2033-2034.
Last season, he recorded 66 points in 82 games, including 60 assists, and won the Calder Trophy. That total broke a Chris Chelios record for rookie defensemen with the Canadiens.
For Montreal Canadiens fans, the most important thing remains Cole's health. The day-to-day designation suggests his return will be monitored step by step. After a frightening scene, it is already a significant sigh of relief.
