Samuel Montembeault gets the start Tonight against the Florida Panthers, and it's stirring things up.

It had been a long time since Montembeault last started a game for the Canadiens. His most recent start dated back to December 2, against the Ottawa Senators.
He also played on December 9, but in relief at Tampa Bay. This time, he's coming back directly into a meaningful situation, facing a Florida team that remains firmly entrenched in the Atlantic Division.

Martin St-Louis and the decision that divides

The decision is drawing attention because Jakub Dobes had been in the picture for a while.
"Dobes was stacking wins again before Xmas. Only makes sense to make him sit and cool down again to try to get Monty going.

Marty didn't learn anything by doing this a month ago..."

- Jordan Decker
The young goaltender has played 20 games this season, posting a 12-5-3 record. He also carries a 2.90 goals-against average and a .894 save percentage. Seeing him give up the crease Tuesday against a division rival surprised more than a few people.
On Montembeault's side, the argument is straightforward: the goal is to get him back into action, but with a plan. The 29-year-old goaltender was assigned to the Laval Rocket for a conditioning stint on December 16.
In 2025-26, he has a record of five wins in 15 appearances, with a 3.65 goals-against average and a .857 save percentage.
The game is coming quickly, and the numbers are a reminder that this won't be a quiet night.
The Canadiens hold a 20-12-6 record, while the Panthers sit at 21-15-2. Florida is also 7-3-0 in its last 10 games. And yes, even without Aleksander Barkov in 2025-26, they are still the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions.
"Dobes getting the shaft hard. Here we go again trying to cater to our worst goalie just to try to build his confidence. Almost tanked our season last time. Let's hope Monty can turn it around I guess."
One thing is certain: the crease has once again become a top topic in Montreal. On Tuesday, it's a real test-and not just for Montembeault.
Despite the noise surrounding the decision, he won't be facing it alone. Veteran forward Brendan Gallagher has publicly voiced his support for Monty, making it clear the locker room still believes in him.
