Martin St-Louis Heavily Criticized for a Strange Decision With One of His Young Players
Late last night, the Montreal Canadiens announced they had assigned defenseman Owen Protz to the Brantford Bulldogs, in the Ontario Hockey League.
Even if, at first glance, this doesn't seem like a big move, it's safe to say fans' reactions exploded.
Indeed, for many, Protz deserved at least one preseason game in a Habs uniform. His toughness had impressed during the rookie tournament, and his energy had led many to believe he'd get a chance to showcase himself at the Bell Centre.
Canadiens Fans Disappointed to See Owen Protz Cut So Quickly
On social media, the comments were numerous.
On social media, comments multiplied:
"He deserved a game," summarized one fan, while another added: "I'm a bit disappointed in this case. He really deserved a chance. He did very well during the rookie tournament, with a big physical presence."
Many found the decision unfair, believing he wasn't the player who should have been the first to go.
"Among all the prospects and defensemen, he certainly shouldn't have been the first to be cut."
The lack of a real opportunity was really the most repeated point:
"Not even a single game, unbelievable," wrote one fan, while another reminded that "This kid is part of the future, but the reality is that the current team is better without him for now."
In my eyes, this wave of comments shows just how much the public already had a soft spot for the youngster. Even if this move remains logical for his development, the frustration of not having seen him in uniform even once is very real.
