Team Canada general manager Doug Armstrong provided an update on the national team's preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games.
"That's the most wide open competition on our team right now. There's probably eight or nine goalies that are fighting for three spots, but it just didn't make sense to bring that many," Armstrong said. "... I talked to those other goalies that aren't there and they understand that and they understand being on the long list is like being at camp. If they're the best goalies come Jan. 1 they're going to be on the team."

For
Samuel Montembeault, goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens, this statement could dampen the excitement generated by his recent selection to the 4 Nations Cup.
While he had earned significant confidence by representing his country in this prestigious tournament, Armstrong reminds that nothing is guaranteed in the long term.
The Quebec native will need a strong start to the season with the Canadiens to convince Hockey Canada leaders
In this context, Montembeault will not only need to maintain a high level of performance in Montreal but also prove he can compete with the best in high-pressure international moments.
Over the past two years, the Quebecer has established himself as a reliable presence in front of the Canadiens' net. His consistency and ability to steal games have helped stabilize a team in the midst of a rebuild.
But at the Canadian level, where comparisons are ruthless, he will need to do even more to stand out.
Doug Armstrong emphasizes that the door remains wide open for everyone. While Montembeault has already shown he can perform on the international stage, his upcoming months with the Canadiens will be decisive.
In short, nothing is guaranteed. The road to an Olympic spot is full of obstacles, and Montembeault will need to fight hard to secure a place among such a competitive group of goalies.
