On Tuesday in Brossard, Samuel Montembeault laid his cards on the table.
After practice, the goaltender acknowledged that he had put far too much pressure on himself. He even summed it up simply:
"Maybe I was putting a bit too much pressure on myself at the start of the season."
He also explained that during difficult stretches, he added even more pressure and took on too much blame. The result: his confidence and morale took a hit. In the Montreal market, things can move fast, especially in goal.
In 17 starts in 2025-26, Montembeault holds a 7-6-1 record, a 3.48 goals-against average, and a .865 save percentage. At 29 years old, he is in the second year of a three-year contract worth $9.45M, with a $3.15M cap hit.
Samuel Montembeault takes responsibility and turns the page
On December 16, the Canadiens assigned him to the Laval Rocket on a conditioning stint, with a clear objective: to find his bearings again. He returned to the big club on December 27, and the recent stretch has brought tangible results back into the picture.
Sam Montembeault today on his Habs season so far:
"I think I was putting a little too much pressure (on myself) at the beginning of the season...When it started going less well, I started putting even more pressure. When I was taking a little too much blame, that's when my confidence and morale wasn't as good. I'm just happy to come back and put that behind me."

Since his return, he first beat the Panthers 3-2 in overtime on December 30, making 28 saves. That win also extended the Canadiens' point streak to six games. On Sunday in Dallas, Montreal won 4-3 in overtime, and Montembeault finished with 24 saves.
What he said on Tuesday was above all a matter of clarity and accountability. No excuses, no detours-just a clear assessment and a simple plan.
