In Montreal, the next wave is called Michael Hage. His 2026 WJC was a strong signal, not just a nice flash.

He finished the tournament first among all scorers with 15 points in 7 games, including 2 goals and 13 assists, on the way to a bronze medal.
When a Canadiens prospect does that on a stage like this, it changes the tone of the conversation. What makes the story even more interesting is that this rise did not come out of nowhere.
Drafted 21st overall in 2024, Hage is coming off a big 2023-2024 season with the Chicago Steel, where he put up 75 points in 54 games, including 33 goals.
He then followed that up at Michigan with 34 points in 33 games in his rookie season, including 13 goals and 21 assists. It is a progression that is clear in black and white, and it carries significant weight when it comes time to talk about his role.

Michael Hage and the question of his role with the Canadiens

The most logical scenario is an arrival in Montreal as soon as his season ends at Michigan. Hage is 19 years old, he is already built for the pro game, and the Canadiens have never hidden the fact that they see him as an important center in the organizational depth chart.
"Michael Hage might be untouchable after the World Juniors he had."
"It's clear that Kent Hughes sees him in Montreal at the end of the season."

Let's be frank: the idea of seeing him spend time in Laval fits less and less with the direction things are heading.
In the short term, the role that makes the most sense is one that allows him to breathe while still contributing offensively. A third-line center role, with time on the power play, followed by a gradual climb at the pace of his adaptation.
The most interesting part of all this is that the Canadiens are not forced to "save" him or rush him. With his recent numbers and his track record, Hage arrives with an already solid floor. And if the door opens at the Bell Centre this spring, he will not be coming just to make up the numbers.
