At Team Canada's World Junior practice, a stack of tires stole the show.

We saw an unusual drill in front of the net. The goaltenders were facing a big stack of tires placed as a screen. The objective was simple: block the view, then force a quick reaction on shots and releases.
In a camp where every detail matters, it sparked plenty of conversation. Hockey Canada invited 27 players in total, with 15 forwards, nine defensemen, and three goaltenders. The exhibition games are coming fast, and the pace is increasing with every session.

Michael Hage already drawing all the attention

Michael Hage, 19 years old, is at the center of the story from a Canadiens perspective. The 2024 first-round pick, 21st overall, received an offensive audition at center on a highly anticipated line. On Canada's scoresheet, he already has an assist in one game, while his rhythm continues to impress at the University of Michigan. In his last 10 games, he has 12 points, including 10 assists.
Meanwhile, Bryce Pickford, 19 years old, is not even on the list of invited players. And that is where it rubs many fans the wrong way.
The Medicine Hat Tigers defenseman, a Canadiens third-round pick in 2025, 81st overall, recorded 47 points in 48 games last season, including 20 goals. In the playoffs, he added 24 points in 18 games with 13 goals, a modern record for a defenseman in the WHL.
In short, on one side, Hage plays a major role at camp. On the other, Pickford stacks goals and stays home. If that is not December hockey, I don't know what is.
