How is the McGroarty trade helping the Habs?
When the Winnipeg Jets announced that they had traded forward Rutger McGroarty to the Pittsburgh Penguins, fans of the Montreal Canadiens who were hoping to see Kent Hughes acquire him were disappointed.
However, the conclusion of the McGroarty case is still positive for the Canadiens. When McGroarty signed his NHL entry-level contract with the Penguins, it removed the possibility for the young forward to play in the NCAA.
Why is this positive for the Canadiens?
The end of McGroarty's college career marks his departure from the University of Michigan, the same university where a certain Michael Hage, the Canadiens' 21st pick in the 2024 draft, plays.
This signing offers Michael Hage the opportunity to take on a more prominent role at the college level, which will likely help him further develop. We're talking about a potential number one center role on the power play.
The 6-foot-1 forward will begin his college career in the American university ranks next season, and knowing that he will have the chance to secure a top role for his team this year is certainly a positive takeaway for the young forward.
