Sportsnet's excellent journalist, Eric Engels, who has been assigned to cover the Canadiens for many years, recently published an article on several hot topics of the team, including the upcoming contract extension for Alex Newhook.

The situation of the 22-year-old forward is reminiscent of Kirby Dach's last year, when Kent Hughes secured the restricted free agent during the draft.
From the same 2019 cohort as Dach, who was the third overall pick, Newhook was also drafted in the first round, just behind Cole Caufield at 16th overall.
Much like Dach in Chicago, the newcomer to the Habs hasn't managed to break into the Avalanche's top-6 this year, in his second season in the NHL.
Considering that Newhook represents the same risk as Dach was last year, namely a promising young player who has not yet blossomed, Engels believes that he will probably sign a four-year deal, with an annual average of $3M to $4M per season.
Obviously, such a contract is a huge gamble for the organization, since currently, Newhook does not deserve such a salary, given his recent performances.
However, by betting on the player's breakout, as with Dach this year, Newhook could quickly become a bargain for the Tricolore, should he take off while under contract for less than $4M per season.
The Canadiens are banking on long-term potential to get the best possible return on investment, and that's a philosophy I really like.
