Besides the trades involving Alex Newhook and Joel Edmundson, the general manager's summer was mainly about offering contract extensions to players already part of the organization. Following the signings of Nicolas Beaudin and Lucas Condotta, Kent Hughes will have to resolve one last case before he can take a well-deserved vacation.
The only restricted free agent whose rights the Habs still own is forward Jesse Ylonen. At 23 years old, the 2018 second round pick had the opportunity to play several games with the Canadiens last season, scoring 6 goals and 10 assists (16 points) in 37 games.
He also dominated with the Laval Rocket where he recorded a total of 32 points in 39 games, proving to the Habs' management that he indeed deserved a contract for the next season. If it weren't for the huge congestion on the Canadiens' attack, Jesse Ylonen could probably earn a spot in Martin St-Louis' lineup for 2023-2024.
Will the forward sign a contract similar to Rafael Harvey-Pinard's? In an ideal world, Ylonen would accept a two-season contract with a two-way first year and a one-way second year.
One thing is for sure, this is a case to follow closely in the coming days as an announcement could be imminent!
