Big rumor involving Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault: he could be signing a long-term contract extension
Samuel Montembeault has never hidden his desire to play for the Canadiens and stay in Montreal. If it were up to him, he would have already signed a contract extension, as he's in the final year of his current deal.
Kent Hughes had other priorities during the offseason, but it appears that negotiations have been initiated between him and the Montembeault camp.
Arpon Basu reports that a longer-term deal, possibly up to five years, is on the table.
Monty won't be demanding an astronomical salary, and if the organization believes he will continue to perform at his current level or even improve, there should be no hesitation to sign him to a long-term contract.
