It must be acknowledged that it was one of the best signings of the summer across the entire NHL. Monahan's value to the Canadiens is unparalleled, and he would be the top scorer for the Flames as we speak. That's no small feat!
Indeed, it's said that Monahan could fetch a first-round pick for the Habs. So why wouldn't Kent Hughes trade him, only to sign him again this summer?
This possibility was suggested by Renaud Lavoie, and we love it. Certainly, it's risky for several factors, but it would be worthwhile.
Firstly, there's no guarantee that Monahan will sign in Montreal this summer, even though he loves the city, the team, and the fans. Secondly, bringing him back would cost more this summer than if Hughes extends his contract during the season. However, he has the means, with over 15 million in cap space projected for the next season.
