The Canadiens made a strong move by acquiring Johnathan Kovacevic off waivers in October 2022. Despite being a defenseman the Jets had turned away, he proved to be very reliable, especially considering the numerous injuries the team had suffered over the past two years.
Despite his commendable efforts, Kovacevic remains a third-pair defenseman when placed in the right role. At times, he is seen making costly mistakes directly linked to the specific role he is asked to fulfill, which may not always be suitable.
That being said, with Justin Barron, Logan Mailloux, Gustav Lindstrom, and David Reinbacher in the lineup, not to mention another year on David Savard's contract, number 26 could potentially be on the market this season.
There will undoubtedly be demand for him, considering he comes at a low cost for another season. This is at least what insider Dan Kramer, who has previously covered the Canadiens' prospects for TSN 690, believes.
