Interested in American hopeful Rutger McGroarty, Kent Hughes would have a lot on his plate to acquire the player who amassed 52 points in 36 games in the NCAA in 2023-2024.

After a few days of rumors, the Jets would want Logan Mailloux or Justin Barron and something else.

That's hefty! The Jets player reportedly announced that he did not want to play for the Manitoba team. Could he refuse to sign a contract and become a free agent? It would be surprising, but not impossible! Remember a certain Adam Fox!

There is still a lot of time left, but the fact that the Jets have Logan Mailloux in their sights says a lot about Rutger McGroarty's talent.

Trade between the Canadiens and the Jets involving Rutger McGroarty? There is new information and it is still a very real possibility.

Engels on McGroarty and the Habs: "I still think it's possible to find a solution and an agreement, so if it happens later in the summer and he's still a member of the Jets, he's a name I would be looking at [for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens]. I still see a fit here for these two teams."

Subsequently, more concrete names have been put forward.

"Still hope for a trade bringing Rutger McGroarty to Montreal? Do the Canadiens really have the assets to make a deal with the Jets?

Or maybe involve Logan Mailloux?" - Marc-Olivier Beaudoin

The first-round pick is the one the Canadiens received, along with Sean Monahan, in the trade concluded in August 2022 with the Calgary Flames (in exchange for future considerations).

Kent Hughes took on the bad contract of Sean Monahan, who was no longer welcome in Calgary due to his numerous injury-related absences. They were looking for a team willing to give him a chance and take on his large contract. Kent Hughes took the bold risk, and it paid off!

He acquired a first-round pick for the 2025 or 2026 season if a bunch of conditions were met in 2024-2025. The conditions are available on the CapFriendly website.

This could be an enticing avenue to get their hands on the very talented McGroarty.

At 20 years old, McGroarty was claimed by the Jets at the 14th overall pick of the 2022 NHL Draft (1st round). He is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound forward who amassed an incredible 52 points in 36 games with the University of Michigan. He's turning heads in American collegiate ranks. He was the second top scorer on his team, finishing one point behind his teammate Gavin Brindley despite playing four fewer games with Michigan.

He is ready to make the jump to the NHL immediately according to journalists and experts who followed his team in 2023-2024. Fast, physical, intense, with good hands and a high hockey IQ, McGroarty has all the tools in his box to find himself in Montreal's top-6 as early as this season.

More details to follow.
