Friday, the Los Angeles Kings traded Phillip Danault to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a 2nd-round pick in 2026.

The pick previously belonged to the Columbus Blue Jackets, according to the details announced.
Danault is 32 years old and had five points in 30 games this season, all assists. He has one season remaining on his six-year contract signed in 2021, with an annual value of 5.5 million.
Immediately after acquiring Phillip Danault from the Los Angeles Kings, Kent Hughes followed up with a second roster move.
"The AHL transactions page shows that the Montreal Canadiens returned Jared Davidson to the Laval Rocket. This move was necessary following the Danault acquisition in order to comply with the 23-man roster limit."

Last season in Los Angeles, Danault played 80 games and registered 43 points, with a +20 rating. He returns with very recent production, in addition to a well-established role over the years.

Kent Hughes wasted no time: Phillip Danault arrives, Jared Davidson goes down

Danault also already has a big history with the Canadiens: 194 points in 360 games between 2016 and 2021. That kind of total speaks to fans, especially when he returns in the middle of a season.
And that is where the "second move" comes into play: Saturday, Jared Davidson was assigned to the Laval Rocket. It is confirmed in the American Hockey League transaction register.
Davidson, 23 years old, had only been recalled last month after an explosive start in Laval: nine goals and 11 points in 13 games.
With the Canadiens, he has one point in 10 games this season. He is on an entry-level contract until 2025-2026, with a cap hit of 862,500 dollars.
According to Renaud Lavoie, Danault is expected to play Tuesday against the Boston Bruins. However, there is a possibility of him starting Sunday vs. the Penguins.
More details to come.
