Canadiens Organization Officially Announces Departure of Veteran 32-Year-Old Defenseman
The Montreal Canadiens and their farm team, the Laval Rocket, have officially announced the departure of 32-year-old defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon.
Wotherspoon is leaving the organization to continue his career in the KHL with Barys Astana.
The Laval Rocket posted a message on their social media to announce his departure and, at the same time, to thank Wotherspoon for his time with the team.
"Good luck to Tyler Wotherspoon with the Barys Astana team in the KHL! Thank you for a great season in Laval!" - Rocket Laval
A Leader: Tyler Wotherspoon Leaves Laval Rocket to Join Barys Astana in the KHL
Wotherspoon, who wore the "A" on his jersey, was known for his leadership role and consistency on the ice.
He never had the chance to establish himself permanently in the NHL, but his time in Laval allowed him to remain a key player in the AHL while supporting the Canadiens' young defensemen. As we saw last year, the Rocket was a dominant team in the AHL.
"Former Utica Comets D Tyler Wotherspoon (21-24) has signed with KHL Barys Barys Astana.
Wotherspoon has played more than 700 AHL games. Plus considered a leader in the room." - Ben Birnell
I think this departure, even if expected, still leaves a gap in Laval, especially in terms of leadership.
