Jeff Marek Floats a Surprising Name from the Predators the Canadiens Could Target
The idea of adding a big name to the Montreal Canadiens' offense is resurfacing once again, and this time, it's Jeff Marek who sparked the conversation.
During an appearance on the Sekeres & Price podcast, the analyst brought up the possibility that the Habs might be interested in a well-known veteran Steven Stamkos.
According to him, Montreal could be one of the teams to watch in this situation, especially since Patrik Laine was taken out of the lineup.
Jeff Marek believes the Canadiens could target Steven Stamkos to strengthen their offense
"Jeff Marek: Re Steven Stamkos rumours: I could wonder about the Canucks, and I could wonder now that Patrik Laine is out, I could wonder about the Canadiens too; something probably has to give here"
On paper, the idea of a former 60-goal scorer wearing the Tricolore jersey is enough to make fans dream.
But in reality, Stamkos is going through one of the worst stretches of his career.
Since joining Nashville, the 35-year-old has collected only 53 points last season - including 27 goals - while posting a -36 plus-minus rating.
An absolutely dreadful season...
And this season, it's even worse. He has one goal, one assist, and a -6 rating after just thirteen games.
In my opinion, it would be risky to take that kind of gamble in Montreal.
The worst part is that his current contract doesn't help matters.
Stamkos is still earning $8 million per season until 2028, along with a full no-movement clause.
Even if the Predators agreed to retain half of his salary, it would still be a heavy commitment for a player who appears to be on the decline.
And it's very likely that this rumor will simply remain... a rumor.
