Martin St. Louis Nears Historic Milestone as Canadiens Head Coach
Martin St. Louis has now been behind the bench of the Montreal Canadiens for a few years, and his team is showing solid progress.
Next season, Martin could reach a very notable milestone in the organization's history.
In 2022, Martin St. Louis officially became the new head coach of the Canadiens, after Dominique Ducharme was shown the door. Ducharme was dismissed only a few months after seeing his team reach the Stanley Cup Final.
After three and a half years, he is now one of the oldest active coaches in the NHL and ranks 4th, behind Jon Cooper of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Jared Bednar of the Colorado Avalanche, and Rod Brind'Amour of the Carolina Hurricanes.
He notably surpasses Bruce Cassidy of the Vegas Golden Knights, Paul Maurice of the Florida Panthers, Spencer Carbery of the Washington Capitals, and Andrew Brunette of the Nashville Predators.
In 2025-26, Martin St. Louis Could Reach a Major Milestone in Montreal Canadiens History
The upcoming season is shaping up to be important for Martin St. Louis, and his win total is likely to rise significantly in the coming years.
Currently, his record is marked by extremely challenging rebuilding years with the Canadiens,
but the future looks very promising with Ivan Demidov, Lane Hutson,
Cole Caufield,
Kaiden Guhle,
Nick Suzuki,
Juraj Slafkovsky,
Noah Dobson,
David Reinbacher,
Zachary Bolduc, and many others.
When Martin earns his first nine wins in 2025-26, he will officially enter the top 10 of the Canadiens' all-time wins list, surpassing Guy Carbonneau, who sits in 10th place.
Toe Blake (1st), Dick Irvin (2nd), Scotty Bowman (3rd), Michel Therrien (4th), Claude Julien (5th), Cecil Hart (6th), Pat Burns (7th), Claude Ruel (8th), and Jean Perron (9th) are the other coaches in the top 10.
He will likely surpass Jean Perron at 9th place quickly, as he is only 11 wins behind him, but he is 57 wins away from Claude Ruel in 8th place.
