The Canadiens had three goaltenders until the last second of the trade deadline last year, and Kent Hughes now has the opportunity to repeat the experience.

Indeed, even though it wasn't ideal, goaltender Jeremy Swayman is currently available, having refused to go to salary arbitration.

This decision places him directly in the spotlight, making him available to receive and accept an offer sheet.

"Jeremy Swayman and the Boston Bruins can now receive an offer sheet from other National Hockey League teams, including the Montreal Canadiens.

This was reported on Saturday by NESN after the 5 p.m. deadline to request the involvement of an arbitrator in contract negotiations had passed." - TVA Sports

Negotiations between the two sides have been very difficult, even catastrophic, in the past, which doesn't help the situation. Moreover, the Bruins traded Swayman's two best friends on the team, which doesn't play in their favor.

"I'm trying very hard not to panic at the thought that the Bruins traded Swayman's two best friends and then potentially upset him at the contract table AGAIN!" - Pete Blackburn

It's very simple: with the trade of Linus Ullmark, Swayman becomes a priority in Boston, but the organization isn't making an offer reflecting that.

The goaltender thus feels humiliated, with good reason. He is their future goaltender, so going through salary arbitration does not reflect what he will have to accomplish in the coming years.

The Bruins had a solid goaltending tandem, and now they have one number one goaltender. Swayman's workload will thus be greater, and he is within his rights to expect a salary that comes with those responsibilities.

An offer sheet could therefore be submitted by Kent Hughes, who has the means to do so, and the rivalry between the two clubs would take an even more dramatic turn.

"According to 98.5 The Sports Hub journalist Ty Anderson, a club must be able to put on the table an amount of $9.1 million to counter Boston.

This is notably the case for the Canadiens, who also have the necessary draft picks." - TVA Sports

Even though Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau are good, they are not of Swayman's caliber, who is undoubtedly one of the best in the world and only 25 years old.

In his career, he has 85 wins and 38 losses, with a 2.32 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage. These are very solid numbers worthy of the best.
