Unless there's a major change of heart in the coming weeks, Marc-André Fleury played his final NHL season in 2024-25.
The Quebec-born goaltender has just received some fantastic news, as the SAQ has decided to honor him with a brand-new product.
On June 21, 2003, in Nashville, Marc-André Fleury was selected first overall in the NHL Draft, just ahead of Eric Staal (2nd), Nathan Horton (3rd), Nikolai Zherdev (4th), and Thomas Vanek (5th).
That draft class also featured several hidden gems, including a certain Patrice Bergeron at 45th overall and Joe Pavelski at 205th, who today stands as the top scorer of his draft year with 476 goals and 1,068 points in 1,332 games with the San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars.
Marc-André Fleury arrived with the Pittsburgh Penguins after playing 151 games for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
After his time in the QMJHL, the Pittsburgh brass opted to be patient, sending him to play a full season in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
In 2005-06, the Sorel native finally reached the big league, joining a team that also welcomed another young phenom to its ranks: a certain
Sidney Crosby.
Four years later, after the arrival of forward
Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins' fairy tale officially came to life as they captured the 2009 Stanley Cup, with Marc-André Fleury shining brilliantly.
They would go on to win again in 2016 and 2017. Captain Crosby's squad was one of the NHL's most dominant teams for over a decade.
While Fleury also wore the jerseys of the Vegas Golden Knights, the Chicago Blackhawks, and wrapped up his career with the Minnesota Wild last season, his heart always seemed to remain in Pittsburgh.
