As the Canadiens sought help after Alex Newhook's injury, Kent Hughes got beaten to the punch by the Canucks, who swooped in and grabbed a key target.

Chris Johnston recently linked David Kampf to the Habs, reinforcing that Montreal could be in the mix.
"Chris Johnston: Re David Kampf: A team like the Canadiens, they don't have a left shot center on their roster, you can't tell me they wouldn't use a player like him; he has attributes that a team like that would find appealing."

Earlier this morning, a report from Arpon Basu backed it up, clearly suggesting that Kent Hughes was talking with David Kampf's camp.
There was real interest, especially following Alex Newhook's ankle fracture. There's obviously a hole left by that injury, let's be honest.
So the Canadiens were looking for a reliable center capable of playing on the penalty kill, and Kampf checked all the boxes.
It seemed clear that Montreal was going to go get him. But we've just learned that this won't be happening.
In fact, it's the Vancouver Canucks who jumped on the opportunity.
A one-year contract at 1.1 million dollars, announced directly by the organization, slammed the door on the Canadiens.
"General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the Canucks have agreed to terms with forward David Kampf on a one year, $1.1 million contract."

David Kampf, the Vancouver Canucks, and a tough blow for Kent Hughes

In my opinion, to really understand the shock, we have to go back to what Basu explained to Martin Lemay.
He said that Kampf's camp was taking the weekend to think about the best destination and added that several teams were in discussions, including Montreal.
In his words, Basu said:
"The Canadiens are really in the derby and there is clear interest in Kampf."
Montreal must now quickly regroup and find solutions to replace the loss of Newhook.
We know the depth at center is already fragile, and the season keeps moving forward.
It's really a missed opportunity.

Do you think the Montreal Canadiens should have increased their offer for David Kämpf?
