It was on Wednesday that we learned Corey Perry was on the verge of reaching an agreement with a Canadian team. According to Frank Seravalli, the Edmonton Oilers are the favorites in the race.
Recall that Gary Bettman gave his blessing to the former Canadien even before Perry met with him in person. He simply wanted to do things the right way.
Perry will, unless there's a surprise, be back this year, and it's really not unanimous. We still don't know exactly what he did for the Blackhawks to terminate his contract in this manner, but we know it involves a staff member and alcohol.
Journalists seem to be more aware, but no one dares to say the exact things. However, some hockey figures have their opinions, and that's the case with Tony Marinaro, who strongly disagrees with his return.
"I have always believed in second chances, but there are exceptions! There are things you do and things you don't do. From what we hear, based on the things that have been done, I wouldn't touch that! There is always a desperate [team] that believes Perry is the missing piece. Nevertheless, if you hire a guy like that, you have no principles!" - Tony Marinaro
These are very harsh comments towards Perry and his future team. It must be very serious what he did, but we have a hard time conceiving that his return could be so easy if it's really that significant.
In short, if the Canadiens sign Perry, we can be sure that we will hear from Marinaro for a long time.
