Nicklas Backstrom Makes Comeback and Signs with Surprise New Team
We've just learned some wonderful news: forward Nicklas Backstrom, former star player of the Washington Capitals, is making his big return to the game - and he's just found a new team.
In 2006, the Washington Capitals selected Nicklas Backstrom in the 1st round, 4th overall, at the NHL Draft.
The 2006 draft class turned out to be pivotal for many organizations, as it included other extremely talented players, including the one and only Phil Kessel, who was selected by the Boston Bruins at 5th overall.
After being drafted, David Fischer played two seasons in the ECHL before finishing his career overseas, including three seasons in Germany.
Nicklas Backstrom was quickly brought up to the big leagues to play his rookie season in 2007-08, and he was sensational, putting up 69 points in 82 games. However, it was ultimately
Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks who won the Calder Trophy with 1,078 votes, just ahead of Backstrom, who received 872.
The Caps' center formed one of the NHL's most powerful duos with fellow countryman Alex Ovechkin for 16 seasons and was a crucial part of the legendary career of the now all-time leading goal scorer in hockey history.
