Steve Yzerman did an outstanding job with the Tampa Bay Lightning, not only building a championship team but also mentoring his successor, Julien Brisebois.

However, his track record hasn't been as impressive since he joined the Detroit Red Wings. Fans there are starting to lose patience, as the team has yet to make the playoffs this year.

Moreover, Yzerman has just made the worst trade of his career, even though he believed he was doing it for the right reasons.

In a moment of panic, the Red Wings' GM traded the very good Jake Walman, a robust defenseman who played significant minutes, along with a second-round pick, for future considerations.

Walman was a fan favorite in Detroit. It's as if Kent Hughes traded David Savard and a second-round pick for nothing. He would be heavily criticized.

The fact is, Yzerman believed he could acquire Jacob Trouba, but the trade fell through at the last moment. He cleared cap space for nothing.

"Although he is considered one of the best GMs in the league and makes very good decisions, he has probably just completed his worst trade by sending defenseman Jake Walman and a second-round pick to San Jose for future considerations."

- Samuel Doiron

It's certain that Steve Yzerman regrets this trade, especially since he had to settle for Erik Gustafsson to fill the void left by Walman.
