Montreal Canadiens' transaction involving a goaltender: Kent Hughes settles the debate, and Samuel Montembeault is here to stay

Firstly, the goal was to resolve the goaltending situation before Christmas. Since that hasn't happened, we expect it to be settled before March 8, which is the trade deadline.

In a surprising turn of events, it could remain this way throughout the season, and the goaltending trio might persist:

"There's a possibility that we finish the season with 3 goalies, but that's not the goal." - Kent Hughes

Clearly, Hughes wants to capitalize on one of his goalies and will wait until he gets the right price. Jake Allen will be much easier to trade next year as it will be the last year of his contract.

We hope it doesn't come to that, but it's a possibility. As for Samuel Montembeault, the general manager has been very clear:

"We wouldn't have signed Sam if we wanted to trade him! It would have been much easier to trade him without a contract." - Kent Hughes

So, Samuel is in Montreal to stay, and he proves with each outing that the organization made the right choice. His recent performances against the Stars and the Rangers have been very convincing, showing that he is on a mission. He hasn't stolen the number one spot.
