Recent NHL trade: The trade value of Mike Hoffman to the Canadiens has just been revealed
The Montreal Canadiens currently have a surplus of forwards in their organization. If the lineup remains the same for the upcoming season, there will be significant congestion for available positions.
Since Mike Hoffman is clearly no longer part of the team's plans, the majority of fans hope to see him leave Montreal, even demanding a trade for him.
However, a recent trade in the NHL has given a good indication of the value of the 33-year-old forward on the market.
Here is the trade in question:
To Chicago:
-Josh Bailey
-2026 2nd-round pick
To the New York Islanders:
- Future considerations
Essentially, due to Bailey's $5 million cap hit in the final year of his contract, the Islanders had to pay a second-round pick for the Blackhawks to take on his contract. Bailey produced 25 points, including eight goals, in 64 games this season.
His situation closely resembles that of Hoffman, as both are entering the final year of their contracts. Hoffman, for his part, recorded 14 goals and 34 points in 67 games this season.
This means that if Kent Hughes wants to unload Hoffman's contract, he will have to pay a significant price to facilitate a trade with another team. Considering that the Canadiens have cap space to absorb his contract without much difficulty, it would be pointless to give up a high draft pick to get rid of him.
Furthermore, the Blackhawks bought out Bailey's contract upon his arrival, making him a free agent.
Would you be willing to trade a 2nd-round pick to get rid of the final year of Mike Hoffman's contract?
