The Montreal Canadiens may possibly have the most difficult selection to make in the first round of the draft.

As most experts point out, in terms of pure talent, there is a group of five young players who dominate this crop, and then there is the rest. Among these top prospects, there are obviously Connor Bedard, but also Adam Fantilli, Leo Carlsson, Will Smith, and Matvei Michkov.

Given the very complex context that Michkov's case represents, it seems almost certain that he will be the last of the five to be selected, which therefore means that the Tricolore will have to decide on his case, to determine whether the organization will take a risk on this possible generational talent, or if it will opt for a safer choice among the less talented prospects.

On this subject, in a recent article on Montreal Hockey Now, the excellent Marco D'Amico reported some very interesting comments, coming from a well-informed source at the Canadiens. Let's say that this information is very reassuring for fans who want the club to dare the Michkov home run.

"The Canadiens recognize undeniable talent when they see it, and they rely on Nick Bobrov, to do his homework on this matter."

"There are a lot of risks concerning Matvei Michkov, but you can bet they won't simply ignore him because he is Russian," the source said.

"They will do their homework, as he is one of those players you simply cannot ignore. If they don't choose Michkov, it's probably because the risk is greater than we know."

From what we can understand, the Montreal organization will study the Russian forward's case very carefully, in order to make the most informed decision possible. The management will not dismiss his candidacy out of hand, simply because of his nationality and the complexity of his case.

The CH leaders will do their duty very seriously with this exceptional hope, because if the team dares to snub him and he were to become a league superstar in 3 or 4 years, as many believe, it could become a catastrophic decision for the Canadiens, especially if the selection made with this famous 5th choice were to underperform.

Obviously, this does not guarantee that Michkov will be drafted by the CH, but this possibility will certainly be examined.
