Top forward available in the trade market: A golden opportunity has just presented itself to Kent Hughes

During his latest segment of "tour of the big rumors circulating in NHL offices right now," Elliotte Friedman revealed a major piece of information, mentioning that a top-tier forward is available on the trade market in Carolina.
Indeed, the Hurricanes are actively trying to acquire Norris Trophy recipient Erik Karlsson, but to do so, Donald Waddell will have to free up some cap space to absorb the star defenseman's contract. According to Friedman's sources, forward Teuvo Teravainen is the player available on the market, and several discussions have already taken place with different NHL general managers. The Hurricanes want to part ways with the Finnish forward without necessarily receiving a regular player with a lucrative contract. Could Kent Hughes attempt to acquire him?

As you can see, Teuvo Teravainen's situation is very similar to that of Sean Monahan last summer. The 28-year-old forward will enter the final year of his contract worth $5.4 million in the 2023-2024 season. Additionally, the Montreal Canadiens are one of the few teams in the NHL with enough salary cap space to acquire his services.
If the Canes are willing to sacrifice a prospect or a draft pick to trade him, it could represent a very interesting option for the Canadiens. After all, the financial risk would be virtually nonexistent, as the forward will become a free agent on July 1st. Moreover, if the Canadiens were to acquire him, Kent Hughes could even try to trade him at the trade deadline to get other assets.
Teuvo Teravainen, 28, was selected 18th overall in the 2012 draft. He possesses remarkable offensive qualities and is an excellent playmaker. Since his arrival in the NHL, he has accumulated 406 points in 594 games, and there is no doubt that he could bring an additional dimension to the Habs' offense.
Teravainen's statistics over the past five seasons:
• 2018-2019: 21 goals and 55 assists (76 points) in 82 games
• 2019-2020: 15 goals and 48 assists (63 points) in 68 games
• 2020-2021: 5 goals and 10 assists (15 points) in 21 games
• 2021-2022: 22 goals and 43 assists (65 points) in 77 games
• 2022-2023: 12 goals and 25 assists (37 points) in 68 games
