On Thursday, Mikus Vecvanags was released by his QMJHL team in Newfoundland.
Drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 2024, he was a 5th-round pick, 134th overall. At 19 years old and standing 6 feet 3 inches tall, the Latvian goaltender was viewed as an intriguing prospect.
Over the past few months, his path in North America has changed frequently. He already had a fluctuating role, and ice time was never guaranteed.
In six games this season, he posted a 2-2-1 record. The Newfoundland club then added Louis-Antoine Denault, which tightened the door even more.
In this type of situation, a young player can quickly become surplus. The decision to release him therefore closes one chapter, without ending his story.
Mikus Vecvanags and the necessary turning point
For the Canadiens, this situation mainly requires putting the pieces back in the right place. The young goaltender needs to keep playing games this season.
What matters now is the next destination and the next start. Simply put, he needs games and a stable stretch.
"Mikus Vecvanags, who belongs to the Canadiens, has been released by the Newfoundland Regiment. He was the team's third goaltender in the first half of the season, and with the arrival of Louis-Antoine Denault, he had become the fourth in the QMJHL."

Next fall, his commitment to the University of Maine remains the key point. This new setting could offer him a different schedule and a clearer routine.
In the meantime, the end of the season becomes a real puzzle. And that's where the word patience comes back into play.
In the short term, the 19-year-old goaltender must bounce back strongly, even as a 134th overall pick. If he re-establishes himself properly, Montreal will have plenty of time to closely follow what comes next.
