Kent Hughes intends to select a forward with his 5th overall pick, but it might not be possible.

Indeed, there are three forwards listed as potential top 5 picks: Macklin Celebrini, Cayden Lindstrom, and Ivan Demidov.

The fate of the Canadiens is directly tied to the selections of the Blackhawks, Ducks, and Blue Jackets. According to the former GM of Columbus, a defenseman was a priority, but the new boss Don Waddell, former GM of the Hurricanes, has decided to play a game of poker.

Waddell mentioned that his team actually needs a forward, which changes the situation.

We all agree that Macklin Celebrini is going to San Jose, so that leaves Demidov and Lindstrom available for the top 5. If Anaheim or Chicago select one, and Columbus does as well, it puts the Canadiens in a less comfortable position.

And that's exactly Waddell's game. According to several analysts, the Blue Jackets' GM wants to deliberately make Kent Hughes believe he will take a forward, making Hughes feel obliged to complete a trade to move up one spot.

The proposed offer involves the 5th and 26th picks for the 4th pick, which is the fair price.

Personally, I don't believe Kent Hughes will fall for this game. The GM will draft the best player available according to him and his colleagues.
