Major three-team trade concocted by Kent Hughes: It's stirring things up
Kent Hughes has developed a habit of surprising us with very creative trades that sometimes come out of left field.
He acquired Sean Monahan and a first-round pick for future considerations, got rid of Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling for Mike Matheson, then reacquired Petry to get rid of Mike Hoffman and traded Petry again. In short, he has been very active and innovative.
You could say that the only trade he hasn't won is the one involving Artturi Lehkonen with the Avalanche, but even there, Justin Barron still has time to develop.
Hughes is, therefore, accustomed to three-team trades, and he could pull off another one in the case of Martin Necas.
«On Necas: Elliotte Friedman has learned that Carolina has spoken to certain teams about what they want. Some teams that might not have what Carolina is looking for could consider making a three-team trade.»
This fits the Canadiens' situation perfectly. The Hurricanes are looking for a top-6 established player and/or a #1 goalie. Kent Hughes has defensemen and prospects/draft picks to trade.
«So this means that the best chance of seeing Necas land in Montreal is via a three-team trade, and the good news for the Habs is that this idea is gaining traction in the NHL. [...]
If the idea is circulating throughout the league, it means it has some foundation. Again, this doesn't necessarily mean that the Habs are part of it, but it suggests that teams might have a chance even if they don't have what the Hurricanes are looking for.» - Félix Forget
We shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. The price demanded by the Canes seems very high and rightly so. Necas is quite a hockey player and is still young.
Kent Hughes has accustomed us to look to the right, then come from the left.
