Michael Matheson sacrificed? He would be the perfect candidate
The Canadiens have too many left-handed defensemen and not enough punch on offense, which explains the constant rumors we hear.
Several top-six forwards are linked to the Habs, but only one left-handed defenseman keeps coming up in trade rumors, Michael Matheson.
An undisputed leader with impressive skating skills, Mike has had his best career moments since joining Montreal, but the surplus of left defensemen and his current market value make him the ideal candidate for a trade.
The reality is that young players are emerging, and Kent Hughes must think about the future. Matheson is important in the short term for the club, but according to reports from The Athletic, he could be on the market.
The site has released a list of 20 players who could be traded this summer, and Matheson ranks 19th on that list.
"But what's interesting in the article is that the 20 players on the list are there because it's based on 'what The Athletic is hearing from NHL sources.'
Ultimately, that means it's possible to see Matheson leave before the start of next season, according to The Athletic's sources. At least, his name is circulating."
With a 62-point season, the 9th best total among NHL defensemen last season, it's not surprising that Mike's name is circulating.
Kent Hughes wants to acquire a top-six forward, and number 8 would be a great addition, along with one or more draft picks.
