Indeed, it's still unclear whether it was Bergevin's fault or Danault's, but one thing is certain: the Canadiens could have easily matched the contract he received from the Kings.
Additionally, Danault could have clearly played in the top 6 and on the power play. That's all he asked for, and he would still be very useful to the Canadiens today.
Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, Marc Bergevin was fired by the Canadiens and found a job with Rob Blake, the GM of the Kings. Quite ironic, isn't it?
Radio station BPM Sports conducted a poll, inspired by Ryan McDonagh's return to Tampa Bay.
They asked which former player fans would most like to see return to Montreal. Phillip Danault was the most popular choice.
He surpassed Artturi Lehkonen, Tyler Toffoli, and Sean Monahan. These are all excellent players who have had success since leaving and are missed by the Canadiens.
Moreover, Tyler Toffoli has recently hinted that he would appreciate a call from Kent Hughes this summer. We know that he and his wife loved Montreal, the city, and the fans.
A return of Phillip Danault seems very unlikely, but for Toffoli, it's quite possible. We will see what Kent Hughes decides to do on July 1st.
