Hockey World Mourns the Heartbreaking Passing of 1100-Game Veteran Referee

Referee Nicolas Dutil, who was with the Quebec junior league for 28 years, has taken his last breath at only 52 years old.

It is with immense sadness that we have just learned that the QMJHL is in mourning. Unfortunately, we learned through journalist Mikaël Lalancette that veteran referee Nicolas Dutil has passed away.
"Sad news in the hockey world: former referee Nicolas Dutil passed away this morning at the age of 52.

He was an official in the QMJHL for 28 years.

My deepest condolences to his loved ones."

Tributes have poured in on social media since the announcement of referee Nicolas Dutil's passing

Since the tragic news, Nicolas Dutil has received a wave of love from fans, and many people have shared heartfelt tributes.
One woman, whose son participated in his Diabolos program, wrote:
"Justice does not exist in health. An inspiring man and an important figure in the hockey world. An inspiration for many young people, including our son. Father, lover, friend, deeply loved family member gone far too soon. Our deepest condolences to the family and to everyone affected by his passing. Thank you for welcoming our son into your Diabolos program three years ago. He has progressed in his sport largely thanks to you. Safe journey, Nicolas Dutil."

The QMJHL also publicly commented on the news via social media:
"The entire QMJHL family is saddened to learn of the passing of Nicolas Dutil, one of the greatest referees in league history. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

Rest in peace Nic, and thank you for everything!"
Just last spring, he was back in action for his first game in over seven months after being diagnosed with cancer.
He will certainly be missed. Deepest Condolences.
