During the 2023 NHL Draft, the Canadiens had the opportunity to select the young and very talented Matvei Michkov. They decided to pass, along with 5 other teams.
Except for the Blackhawks with Connor Bedard, the other four clubs, including the Canadiens, might bitterly regret it. Indeed, his talent is undeniable, but his three-season contract in the KHL has blocked many.
A twist in the situation, as SKA St. Petersburg, his team in the KHL, is on very good terms with the Flyers and communication is good. So much so that the President of the organization, Alexander Medvedev, would be willing to let him go to North America despite his contract.
For the Canadiens, it would be a real slap in the face, especially since David Reinbacher is not yet ready to play in the NHL. Michkov would therefore play before him.
Already, there was discontent after David Reinbacher's selection, imagine if Michkov arrives in a few months and becomes a good player. We won't hear the end of it!
