On Thursday, the San Jose Sharks acquired goaltender Laurent Brossoit in a trade involving four players.
They also acquired defenseman Nolan Allan and a 2028 seventh-round pick.
The Chicago Blackhawks receive Ryan Ellis, Jake Furlong, and a 2028 fourth-round pick. A trade that impacts both the present and the future.
Brossoit ultimately did not play a single game with Chicago. Over his NHL career, he has appeared in 140 games, posting a 64-46-13 record with a .911 save percentage.
In 2023-24 with Winnipeg, he played 23 games, recording a 15-5-2 record with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage. In Rockford this season, he compiled a 3-3-0 record in six appearances, with a 3.38 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.
Chicago acquired him in the summer of 2024, but an injury complicated everything. He spent the entire 2024-25 season on injured reserve before regaining his rhythm in the American Hockey League. He could also become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

In the same transaction, Nolan Allan also heads to San Jose with an already tangible resume. Last season, the young defenseman played 43 games with the Blackhawks, collecting one goal and seven assists with a -13 rating. He was drafted 32nd overall in 2021, a late first-round pick.
In Chicago, the arrival of Ryan Ellis draws attention, even though he has not played in the NHL since 2021-22. Over his career, Ellis has appeared in 566 games, scoring 76 goals and totaling 275 points. In 2021-22, his season ended after just four games, during which he recorded five points.
Jake Furlong completes the return: a defenseman drafted in 2022, 140th overall.
Kent Hughes has previously been linked to goaltending scenarios, but the situation appears less pressing these days. It remains a simple reminder: a goalie can move quickly-very quickly-when a door opens.
