The Kings get rid of Pierre-Luc Dubois, and we have the details
There were many rumors about a potential contract buyout for Pierre-Luc Dubois, who will turn 26 on June 24.
Players under 26 years old only cost a third of their salary cap hit to the team that buys them out, while those 26 and older cost two-thirds. Therefore, an important decision from the Kings was anticipated.
However, in a surprising twist, Dubois was ultimately traded without any salary retention. Wow!
"The trade is one for one: PLD for Kuemper.
No salary retained." - Pierre LeBrun
This trade is incredible. The Kings paid a high price to acquire Dubois just a year ago, and now they're giving him away for a decent goaltender.
It's a relief for the Kings, but a risk for the Capitals. Dubois has a golden opportunity to take this organization under his wing, especially with Alex Ovechkin expected to depart within the next two years.
This also suggests that the Caps were willing to offer Dubois this kind of contract last year, but they didn't want to give up as much as the Kings did to the Jets.
In any case, Pierre-Luc Dubois is now a member of the Washington Capitals for the next seven years, unless he gets traded again.
"So the trade is Pierre-Luc Dubois for Darcy Kuemper, one-for-one.
The Kings needed a goaltender and didn't want Dubois' contract anymore. Not sure if Kuemper really solves the problem, but well! They were probably in on the Markstrom situation and turned to Kuemper after he went to New Jersey.
The Caps, on the other hand, had a huge need at center. But PLD will cost the Caps $8,500,000 for the next 7 years, while Kuemper will cost the Kings $5,250,000 for the next 3 seasons." - Marc-Olivier Beaudoin
