Is Cole Caufield about to become a target for an offer sheet?

The contract extension negotiations for Cole Caufield are starting to drag on and Montreal Canadiens fans are wondering what is causing the delay in finalizing an agreement between both parties.

Technically, the club has the necessary funds to satisfy their star forward, and the Canadiens cannot afford to sign him in the short term. It is crucial that he remains in Montreal for a minimum of seven years.

However, as the opening of the free agent market approaches, a threat looms on the horizon in this matter, as the young star could become a highly enticing target for an offer sheet.

This was raised by Marc Dumont from Montreal Hockey Now , who is also a former employee of the Canadiens. He even added that the Philadelphia Flyers would be a potentially dangerous team in this scenario.

"Regarding an offer sheet, of course, it is a possibility. Some media outlets, particularly those covering the Flyers (the same team that decided to choose Cam York before Caufield in the 2019 Draft), have already suggested that it would be a good idea. And it's hard not to agree," said Marc Dumont.

Dumont also mentioned that he would not be surprised if "most NHL teams are at least discussing a possible offer to Caufield."

Let's just say that this possibility could seriously hinder the Canadiens' plans as the negotiations currently seem to be at a standstill.

The Montreal organization simply cannot afford to lose their star player over a few lingering details in reaching a long term agreement.

Here is a reminder of the potential compensations for an offer sheet:

$6,435,187 to $8,580,250: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks

$8,580,251 to $10,725,314: 1st, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks

More than $10,725,314: 4x 1st round picks
