What a move by Kent Hughes! While we all thought the Habs would have to trade a draft pick to get rid of Mike Hoffman's contract, the GM finally managed to get a 22-year-old forward in Nathan Légaré and a second-round pick.
Also, according to the information reported by Eric Engels, the Canadiens' GM is currently working on another trade involving Jeff Petry, which would probably allow the Habs to acquire another asset.
Wow! Since the Penguins retain 25% of Petry's salary, the 35-year-old defenseman will only use $4.69 million of the salary cap for the next two seasons. Eric Engels also mentioned that the Habs could potentially retain 50% of his salary to facilitate a trade.
Although he has somewhat slowed down, the veteran still scored 31 points in 61 games last season. He could certainly become a very interesting option for a team looking to improve for the playoffs. At $2.34 million, his contract would be a real bargain for the team that acquires him.
One thing's for sure, this will be a closely watched situation.
Once again, Kent Hughes pulled off a real home run.
