All Signs Point to Kent Hughes Making a Surprise Canadiens Trade This August
If history is any indication, Montreal Canadiens fans would be wise to keep a close eye on the month of August.
Since taking over as general manager in January 2022, Kent Hughes has consistently orchestrated at least one major trade every August, transforming what's traditionally a quiet period in the hockey calendar into a strategic moment to reposition the organization.
The first sign of this trend dates back to August 18, 2022, when Hughes acquired Sean Monahan and a 2025 first-round pick from the Calgary Flames in exchange for mere "future considerations." It was a masterstroke widely praised across the NHL.
The following year, Hughes struck twice within a matter of days. On August 6, 2023, he pulled off a complex trade with the Penguins involving Nathan Légaré, Casey DeSmith, Jeff Petry, and a 2025 second-round pick, in exchange for Rem Pitlick and Mike Hoffman, while also benefiting from Pittsburgh retaining salary.
Nine days later, on August 15, 2023, he flipped Petry to Detroit for Gustav Lindstrom and a 2025 fourth-round pick, this time with Montreal retaining part of Petry's salary.
Most recently, on August 19, 2024, Hughes surprised everyone again by acquiring Patrik Laine and a 2026 second-round pick in exchange for defenseman Jordan Harris.
A risky but high-upside move, it once again showed the GM's willingness to bet on players looking to revive their careers.
