Canadiens' Potential Trade Package to Land Mason McTavish From Ducks Revealed

At 22 years old, the former third-overall pick in 2021 represents a rugged, talented center who is still on the rise. A potentially major acquisition for any team, but at a high cost. And that's where the discussion gets serious.

Because in the McTavish case, there are two prices to consider: the one to pay in assets to acquire him, and the one to pay in dollars.

On the Ducks' side, the demands are clear: they would like a top young right-shot defenseman in return.

For the Detroit Red Wings, that likely means parting with an Axel Sandin-Pellikka. And for the Montreal Canadiens? It would mean seriously considering a name like David Reinbacher. And that's where the dilemma takes shape.

Reinbacher, the fifth-overall pick in 2023, is seen by the Montreal organization as a long-term defensive pillar. Sacrificing him for a forward, as promising as he may be, would be a bold-if not risky-decision for Kent Hughes.

That said, McTavish would fill a glaring need at center, a strategic position that remains fragile despite the presence of Nick Suzuki.

But we must not forget the second cost: the contract. McTavish is nearing the end of his entry-level deal.

Any team acquiring him will sooner or later have to sign him long-term, with a salary that could easily exceed $8 million per season.

With that in mind, are the Canadiens in the best position? They have the cap space, but will they want to sacrifice one of their best prospects for a player who will be expensive in both assets and money?
