The story between the Montreal Canadiens and the Quebec Nordiques continues to make waves, even though it's been nearly 30 years since the Nordiques left Quebec City.

The Canadiens-Nordiques rivalry a matchup that still gets people talking!
And this time, it's not a battle on the ice, but a jersey controversy that's stirring up tension.
According to an interview on Radio X with Jean Martineau, former Director of Communications for the Nordiques and the Avalanche, the Canadiens reportedly ignored a call from Joe Sakic this summer.
"Jean Martineau: The Canadiens have always been against the Nordiques"
The Avalanche's GM wanted permission to have his players wear the Nordiques' blue jersey during their upcoming visit to the Bell Centre on January 29, 2026.

The Montreal Canadiens Reportedly Ignored Joe Sakic's Call

Martineau explained that despite Sakic's request, the Canadiens never returned the call.
"Joe Sakic personally contacted the Canadiens to ask if the Avalanche could wear the Nordiques jersey in Montreal. And he's still waiting for a response."

This revelation, reported by Martin Leclerc on Martin Lemay's podcast, has sparked plenty of reaction from fans. I have to admit, I was quite surprised by it too...
"The Canadiens still haven't returned Joe Sakic's call, while the Avalanche want to wear the Nordiques' colors during their visit to Montreal on January 29!"
Still according to Martineau, the relationship between the Canadiens and anything related to the Nordiques remains tense.
"This isn't new. The Habs have been protecting their territory in Quebec since the 1950s." - Martin Lemay

Even in 2025, Geoff Molson seems reluctant to give visibility to the Nordiques brand - especially as the Canadiens continue to strengthen their popularity throughout the province.
I understand Molson's point of view - the Canadiens want to maintain their unique image in Quebec, even if that won't please many nostalgic fans who loved the old rivalry.
And honestly, let's be real: seeing the Nordiques' blue jersey at the Bell Centre would have brought back some great memories for a lot of people!
