Former Defenseman David Savard Could Make Surprising Return to Canadiens in New Role
David Savard had a very solid 14-season career in the NHL.
Drafted in the 4th round by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2009, he made his professional debut after excelling in the QMJHL with Baie-Comeau and Moncton, where he won the President's Cup and the Defenseman of the Year award in 2010.
He spent 10 years with the Jackets, building a reputation as a defensive pillar with his physical style, blocking numerous shots and delivering solid hits.
After winning the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning, he signed with the Montreal Canadiens, where he played his last 4 seasons, becoming a mentor for young players like Guhle and Xhekaj.
With 870 games, 242 points, and 1,624 blocked shots, Savard hung up his skates at 34, following an emotional final playoff run with the Canadiens. A true respected warrior!
David Savard has had talks about returning to the Canadiens in a different role
On the sidelines of the traditional Quebec Pro-Am, David Savard gave an interesting interview to TVA Sports..
When asked if a return in a mentor role (similar to Francis Bouillon) could interest him, David did not hide his interest.
"We've had discussions, but it's still in talks, if I can say. We're continuing to speak with Kent [Hughes] and Gort [Jeff Gorton], just to see if there's a possibility."
"There's nothing urgent because I'll be in Montreal anyway when the season starts. We'll see if they need me. We also have to see if it can work with the family schedule. My family has followed me through the years, and now the priorities are going to change." - David Savard, to TVA Sports
The "fit" seems very natural.. Let's see if such a role will be offered to him in the coming months, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him hovering around his former teammates during training camp.
